“Wu Reminds us of Laurence Olivier” The Times

Masterclass is pleased to announce that Taiwanese actor of the silver screen and theatre Wu Hsing-kuo (吳興國) will be holding a masterclass and workshop at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on Tuesday 20th August 2013 at 2pm, covering subjects ranging from traditional Jingju (Beijing Opera) to Shakespeare and Kafka.

The masterclass will be presented in Wu's native Mandarin Chinese with interpretation by Dr Li Ruru (李如茹) from the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, University of Leeds.

Wu trained at Taiwan's state-run Fu-Hsing Chinese Opera School, specialising in male martial roles. In 1986, he co-founded the Contemporary Legend Theatre (當代傳奇劇場) in Taipei, seeking to revitalise traditional Chinese theatre by adapting Western classical plays to the style and techniques of Beijing Opera. He is recognised as a pioneer in cross-cultural performance. On this year's Edinburgh International Festival opening night, Wu will be presenting his version of Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis.
